Dr Schalk van Heerden

Dr Schalk van Heerden MBChB, MFGP {SA]. MMed (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Dr Schalk van Heerden completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria in 1971. After completion of his year of internship, he was appointed as a senior houseman in paediatrics for one year. He then joined a general practice in Pretoria for five years.

Dr Van Heerden was the first registrar to be appointed in the plastic surgery department at the Medical University of South Africa [now Sefako Makgatho University] in 1981. He obtained his M.Med degree in 1986, and moved to private practice, from where he retired in 2020.

He was a part time consultant in the department for 36 years, being actively involved in teaching and examining candidates for their final exams. This involvement also afforded him the opportunity to further his interest in cleft surgery.

Dr Van Heerden has served as ombudsman, both regional and for APRASSA, for many years, and also served on the executive committee of the Association, during which time he served as president for two years and as past president for another two years.

Schalk enjoys activities such as travelling in Africa, fly fishing and golf.
