Prof Nick Kairinos is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, who did his undergraduate training in Bloemfontein and his post-graduate degrees at UCT. His research on Damage Control Surgery resulted in his MMed being awarded with distinction. During his time as a registrar, he also conducted ground-breaking research on the mechanism of action of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, which earned him the first plastic surgery PhD to be granted to a South African from UCT. His affinity for research resulted in him winning between two and five congress presentation awards, every year, throughout his registrar training.
Soon after starting his private practice in 2011 he spearheaded the development of a multidisciplinary day hospital in Century City, which opened in 2015. The innovative concepts in the design and functioning of this hospital have resulted in it becoming one of the most successful day hospitals in South Africa.
He is also the founding member of the Cape Advanced Wound Care Centre (CAWCC), the first true private multi-disciplinary wound care centre of excellence in the country.
Prof Kairinos was until recently in private practice but is now the Head of Division of Plastic Surgery at Stellenbosch University/Tygerberg Hospital.
